Roughness as a Parameter to Characterize Granular Flows: Preliminary Results
Abstract
We attempt to characterize different flow regimes in granular media into a Hele-Shaw cell by means of the roughness of the free surface. We also try to distinguish different zones within a single free surface by measuring their roughness. The results, analyzed using the free software Image J modified ad hoc, indicate that the roughness allows distinguishing, at least, some of the flow regimes under study, which suggests possible geophysical applications.
