Advances in Proton Therapy
Abstract
The earliest medical treatments using proton radiation began more than 50 years ago. However, the development of more precise methods of imaging and for applying the treatments, together with positive results reported recently, and better economic perspectives, have given rise to an “explosion” of new centers offering this therapy. New techniques such as proton radiography and pencil-beam scanning, which use a narrow bean in conjunction with the careful control of the radiation intensity, will allow applying the radiation only in the crucial places and with the required power to avoid most of secondary effects.
