Abstract

The introduction of the mobile devices in the teaching of physics has gained importance in recent times due to the ample range of sensors they contain and their ability to accomplish measurements in real time. The study of the dynamics of a rigid body rotation using the accelerometer of a smart phone was tackled. The problem is a modification of the standard laboratory device consisting in a crossbeam that rotates in a horizontal plane around a vertical axis. Through an ad hoc Android application, it was possible to visualize the behavior and to measure the radial and tangential components to a linear acceleration. Moreover, the moment of inertia and the friction torque of the crossbeam was calculated. Finally, we discuss some particular cases of the main problem that shows the potential of these devices for physics teaching.
